133.415 € for two fingers mutilated by firecracker
The Council of State adopted the first instance verdict which awarded compensation due to improper exercise of police duties for the mutilation of the fingers (index and middle) of the right hand of a sports fun by hooligans.
At the same time, the State stated unequivocally at the Supreme Court that firecrackers, flares, stones and other objects are brought in and hidden in the stadiums before the games begin, but nonetheless the necessary checks are not made by the Greek police.
The State Council, chaired by Vice-President Nicholas Sakellariou and Rapporteur Charalambos Komnenos upheld appellate decision which obliges the State to pay the amount of EUR 133.415 to the unlucky basketball fan who lost two fingers of his right hand after the explosion of a firecracker during rival clashes of fans before the beginning of a basketball match.
The clashes took place on 11.3.2007, at the METS arena, before the start of the basketball match (Second league, men) among teams of Pangrati and Peristeri.
